Sauna and jacuzzi: the order that actually works
Heat, water and rest follow a sequence. Here's how to do a spa circuit without walking out drained.
A spa circuit isn't a list of things to do in any order you like. It's a sequence, and the order changes how you walk out.
The logic is simple: heat opens, water sustains, cold closes, rest consolidates. Skipping a stage or inverting two is the difference between leaving restored and leaving with a headache.
The sequence
1. Warm shower, two minutes
Before anything else. It cleans the skin, prepares it for the temperature change, and is basic courtesy for shared water. Dry off properly before the sauna: damp skin makes the heat feel far more aggressive than it is.
2. Sauna, ten to fifteen minutes
This is where vasodilation starts. If you've never done it, fifteen minutes is a ceiling, not a target. Start with eight or ten.
Sit on the lower bench your first few times, where it's several degrees cooler. Get out the moment you feel dizzy, nauseous or notice your heart racing. It isn't a competition.
3. Cool down, two or three minutes
The stage almost everyone skips, and the most important one. A cool shower — not ice-cold all at once — starting at the feet and hands and moving toward the centre of the body. The thermal contrast is what produces the reset feeling. Without it, the heat just leaves you heavy.
4. Rest, five minutes
Sitting or lying down, with water. Your blood pressure is resettling and needs the margin. Chain the sauna straight into the jacuzzi and you'll end up lightheaded.
5. Jacuzzi, fifteen to twenty minutes
Now. Hot water with hydromassage works on muscles that are already warm and receptive. Position tense areas in front of the jets rather than directly against them — sustained pressure on one spot gets uncomfortable fast.
Past twenty minutes the benefit plateaus and dehydration begins.
6. Body scrub and wrap
The order here is functional, not aesthetic. Hydrated skin with open pores absorbs the actives in a wine, mud or chocolate wrap far better. Exfoliating dry at the start of a circuit wastes half the effect.
7. Massage, at the end
A muscle warmed by forty minutes of water responds differently from a cold one. The therapist reaches deeper with less pressure, and it hurts you less. That's why circuits finish on the table rather than starting there.
8. Ten minutes of nothing
No phone. This is when the body settles everything that came before. It's also, almost always, the best part of the afternoon.
Water, not alcohol
Between the sauna, the jacuzzi and the wrap you lose a fair amount of fluid. Drink water at every pause, even if you're not thirsty.
Alcohol before or during a circuit is a bad idea: it dehydrates, distorts how you perceive heat, and raises the odds that a sudden pressure change puts you on the floor. The glass of wine in a couples' circuit is for the end, with food, not in the water.
How long it takes
A properly built circuit doesn't come in under two hours. Ours run 130 to 210 minutes, and it isn't padding — each stage needs its time and its pauses. A forty-five-minute “circuit” is a hot bath with a better name.
When heat isn't for you
Sauna and jacuzzi aren't for everyone. Check with your doctor first if you have uncontrolled hypertension, heart disease, arrhythmia, epilepsy, or diabetes with neuropathy — because heat perception is altered — or if you're pregnant. In pregnancy, intense heat is generally best avoided, particularly in the first trimester.
Don't go in with a fever, an active infection, open wounds, or under the influence of alcohol or sedatives.
And if at any point you feel dizzy, nauseous, notice palpitations or blurred vision: get out, sit down, drink water and tell someone. Nobody on the team will think you're overreacting.
If you come as a couple or a group
The temptation is to talk the whole way through, and that's fine. But try to keep at least the sauna and the final ten minutes in silence. Conversation keeps your head in work mode, and the circuit exists precisely to get it out of there.
